In Kenya’s Rift Valley, a local NGO partnered with the government to address a pressing need: 30 affordable, durable homes for rural families displaced by floods. The challenge? The area had no paved roads, so large construction equipment couldn’t reach the site.
On-the-Ground Constraints: Families needed homes under $8,000 to qualify—far below the cost of brick-and-mortar builds. Heavy rainfall and termite infestations meant flimsy structures would fail quickly. And the NGO wanted to employ local workers, who had no advanced construction training.
Flat-Pack to the Rescue: Flat-pack container kits checked every box. Each kit—pre-cut steel frames, termite-resistant plywood walls, and waterproof roofing—weighed under 500kg, fitting in the back of a small pickup truck. Local workers received just one day of training to assemble the kits with basic tools like hammers and drills. Each 25㎡ home included two bedrooms, a living area, and a kitchen, designed to withstand heavy rains with sloped roofs and sealed joints.
Long-Term Wins: Thirty homes were completed in 45 days with a 20-person local crew. Each home cost $5,500, coming in under budget. After 12 months, none showed leaks or termite damage—even after the region’s annual flood season.
